ECOLOGICAL MIGRATION MODEL TOWN
A dust storm sweeps the resettlement town of Hongsibao, in Ningxia Province.
Hongsibao, the model town, created from scratch to resettle 200,000 ecological refugees from the arid mountains, in Ningxia Province, is the biggest resettlement of that kind in China. The new town, that stands amidst 42 villages, has ÒeverythingÓ: shops, a market, a huge square with futuristic streetlights and even a three-star hotel, where officials receive foreign donors. Irrigation pumps and channels draw water from the nearby Yellow River to sustain that manmade oasis in the desert.
